Summer 2023 is all about embracing the maximalist lifestyle, and your nails should be no exception. It’s time to break out the tinsel hair extensions, add a few more layers of glowy body oil, and go all out with the brightest-colored eyeliners you can find. This season’s nail trends are anything but subtle, with neon colors, dangly jewelry, textured designs, and all things chrome taking center stage.

I’ve done my research and scoured Instagram to bring you the hottest summer 2023 nail trends. I will share tips and tricks on how to DIY these looks at home, so get ready to stock up on some press-on nail kits and chrome nail powder.

1. Iridescent-chrome nails for summer 2023

If you want to take your glazed-donut nails to the next level this summer, nail artist Miki Higuchi suggests using an iridescent pearly chrome powder that has pink, blue, and purple highlights. This will give your nails a mermaid-inspired look, similar to what Halle Bailey showcased at the 2023 Oscars, as it will glow brightly in the sunlight.

2. Pastel French tips

Choi explains that for the Brandon Maxwell SS2023 runway show, she created pastel French tips. Instead of applying pastel colors all over the nail, which might give a spring vibe, she suggests applying a delicate French line on a transparent and neutral nail polish.

3. Cyber-dot nail trend

If you’re familiar with the iconic Jean Paul Gaultier dress that inspired these nails, then you’ll appreciate how the inspiration has translated to nail art. According to Higuchi, the colorful and trendy look is perfect for summer. You can amplify the effect by going for a multicolor finish that mimics the dress.

4. Sheer-blush summer nails

These nails draw inspiration from the iconic Jean Paul Gaultier dress, and if you recognize it, you’ll love how it’s been translated into nail art. Higuchi describes the look as colorful and trendy, making it ideal for summer. To achieve the full effect, opt for a multicolor finish that mimics the dress.

5. Strawberry-glazed donut nails for summer

Nail artist Kameron Lange suggests that pink nails are in trend partly because of the Pantone Color of the Year 2023, Viva Magenta, which belongs to the red/pink family, and also due to the release of the Barbie movie this year. To add some shine and sparkle for summer 2023, Lange recommends using chrome powder on top. To achieve this look at home, nail artist Areia Nguerebanda advises applying a pink base color, such as the bright-pink Gucci Glossy Nail Polish in Valentine Fuschia or the muted blush Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail Polish in Blushed Petal, and then lightly brushing on the chrome finish with a silver chrome powder.

6. Negative-space French tips

According to nail artist Jin Soon Choi, French manicures will always be timeless, but there are always fresh variations to make it look more elevated each season. Choi predicts that there will be different takes on French manicures using unique color combinations and French line shapes, such as the negative-space French tips shown above. You can try it with any color you prefer, whether you opt for a neutral look or a brighter shade.

7. Denim nails for summer

I bet you’ve recently added a long denim skirt and wide-leg jeans to your wardrobe, right? Well, if you want to match your nails with this trend, nail artist Jin Soon Choi suggests going for a gray-blue polish for summer 2023, which can give off the vibe of distressed blue jeans. And for a more authentic denim finish, apply a matte top coat to complete the look.

8. Lavender summer 2023 nail trend

The Cosmo team has been discussing the lavender beauty trend for months now, predicting that it will be huge in 2023 for everything from eyeliners to hair colors to nails. To achieve an opaque, non-streaky finish, they suggest applying two to three coats of light-purple nail polish.

9. Tropical summer florals

Personally, my plan for this summer is to manifest a beach vacation with a tropical-floral design similar to the one shown above. To achieve an even stronger Y2k vibe, I’ll definitely go for airbrushed flowers, but if I have enough time and confidence, I might also try painting the flowers myself.

10. Neon summer nails

The vibrant neon colors on these nails make me crave a summer vacation with a straw tote and a spicy romance novel. For a more subtle look, I may opt for a single neon accent nail to ease my way into summer nails. But when I do take a vacation, I definitely plan to try a similar neon design as shown above.

For a simple, classic look this summer, you can’t go wrong with a bright, cherry-red nail polish. Apply two coats of the color and finish it off with a shiny top coat.
